Peptide List: Common Types, Uses, and Current Research

Peptides range from established prescription medicines to experimental compounds supported mainly by laboratory or animal studies. This guide explains what researchers know, what remains uncertain, and why medical oversight matters.

What are peptides?

Peptides are short chains of amino acids, the same building blocks that form proteins. Many act as signaling molecules, helping regulate processes such as metabolism, appetite, inflammation, skin function, and hormone release. The body makes peptides naturally, and scientists can also produce peptide-based medicines or research compounds.

“Peptide” is a chemical category, not a guarantee that a product is effective or safe. Some peptide drugs have undergone large clinical trials and FDA review. Others have only early human data or preclinical findings, and products sold online may not contain the identity, purity, or dose shown on the label. Common peptides and proposed uses

CJC-1295 and Ipamorelin

CJC-1295 is a growth hormone-releasing hormone analog, while Ipamorelin activates the ghrelin receptor. They are often discussed together because both may increase growth hormone signaling through different pathways. Proposed benefits include improved body composition, recovery, sleep, or healthy aging, but these combined uses have not been established in robust clinical trials. Early CJC-1295 studies measured hormone changes, not durable health outcomes, and evidence for the combination is especially limited. A clinical overview of CJC-1295 and Ipamorelin can provide additional context, but it should not replace an individualized medical assessment.

Neither compound is FDA-approved as a drug. FDA has identified potential immunogenicity and impurity concerns and has reported serious adverse events associated with CJC-1295, including increased heart rate and a systemic vasodilatory reaction. Growth hormone pathway stimulation may also contribute to fluid retention, joint symptoms, elevated blood sugar, or increased insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1). BPC-157

BPC-157 is a synthetic peptide promoted for tendon, ligament, muscle, and gastrointestinal healing. Most supportive findings come from cell and animal experiments. Human research is too sparse to determine whether it improves healing, which dose or route would be appropriate, or what long-term harms may occur. BPC-157 is not FDA-approved. FDA has cited possible immunogenicity, peptide-related impurities, and difficulty characterizing the active ingredient, as well as insufficient safety information for proposed administration routes.

Semax

Semax is a synthetic peptide studied primarily for neurologic effects, including possible neuroprotection and changes in neurotrophic signaling. It is sometimes promoted for cognition, attention, mood, migraine, or recovery after cerebral ischemia. However, the available studies are limited in size, accessibility, geographic diversity, and independent replication. There is not enough high-quality evidence to conclude that the Semax peptide is safe and effective for these uses.

Semax is not FDA-approved. FDA has flagged potential immunogenicity and peptide-impurity concerns for compounded products, and the absence of standardized U.S. labeling leaves important questions about dosing, interactions, and long-term risk unresolved.

Tesamorelin

Tesamorelin is a growth hormone-releasing factor analog. Unlike the experimental compounds above, an FDA-approved tesamorelin product is indicated to reduce excess abdominal fat in adults with HIV and lipodystrophy. It is not approved for general weight management, anti-aging, or athletic performance. Patients considering it for its approved indication can review tesamorelin treatment information and discuss whether its narrow indication applies to them.

Clinical trials support reduced visceral abdominal fat in the approved population, but long-term cardiovascular safety has not been established. Important risks include elevated IGF-1, fluid retention, glucose intolerance or diabetes, hypersensitivity, and injection-site reactions. It is contraindicated in several situations, including active malignancy and pregnancy.

How to interpret claimed benefits

A plausible mechanism is only a starting point. Better evidence comes from randomized controlled trials that compare a peptide with placebo or standard care, enroll enough diverse participants, measure outcomes that matter to patients, and monitor adverse effects for an appropriate period. A rise in a biomarker such as growth hormone or IGF-1 does not automatically mean better sleep, faster recovery, more muscle, or longer life.

Many popular peptide claims rely on animal studies, uncontrolled case series, or short trials measuring surrogate outcomes. Those findings can justify further research, but they cannot reliably predict the balance of benefit and harm for an individual patient.

Risks and quality concerns

  • Drug-specific effects: Hormone changes, blood sugar disruption, fluid retention, headache, nausea, hypersensitivity, or other effects may occur depending on the peptide.
  • Injection risks: Pain, infection, dosing errors, and tissue injury are possible, particularly when products are not prepared or handled under appropriate sterile conditions.
  • Purity and identity: Unapproved products may be contaminated, degraded, mislabeled, or contain peptide-related impurities that provoke an immune response.
  • Unknown long-term effects: Short studies cannot rule out delayed metabolic, cardiovascular, immune, or cancer-related risks.
  • Interactions and contraindications: Other medicines, pregnancy, diabetes, active cancer, and pituitary or endocrine disorders can materially change risk.

Regulatory status in the United States

FDA approval means a specific manufacturer's product was reviewed for safety, effectiveness, and quality for a defined use. It does not extend to every product containing the same or a related peptide. Tesamorelin has a limited approved indication; CJC-1295, Ipamorelin, BPC-157, and Semax are not FDA-approved drugs.

Compounded drugs can meet an important clinical need, but they are not FDA-approved, and FDA does not verify their safety, effectiveness, or quality before marketing. FDA has specifically identified potential significant safety risks for several bulk peptide substances discussed in this article. “Research use only” products are not approved for human self-administration.
